ENACT Open Conference (Palermo, May 8, 2026)

City of Palermo

The ENACT project invites you to its open conference, taking place on May 8, 2026 at the Astoria Palace Hotel (Via Montepellegrino 62, Palermo). This full-day event brings together researchers, media professionals, accessibility experts, end-users, and advocates to explore how news and information can become truly accessible to everyone through easy-to-understand (E2U) formats.

Programme

The morning programme opens with a session on easy-to-understand language by Roberta Piazza from the University of Catania, followed by a user testimonial from Fabiana Muscas, offering a first-hand perspective on navigating news and information. Roberto Scano, AccessibleEU’s expert in Italy, will then present on the AccessibleEU initiative and accessibility of information, while Veronika Rot, ENACT Project Coordinator and Accessibility Specialist at RTV Slovenija, will introduce the ENACT project itself. A highlight of the morning is a demonstration session where four EU public broadcasters showcase their E2U news formats: RTV Slovenija, Latvijas Radio, ORF and 3Cat.

The afternoon sessions dive deeper into research and practice. Anna Matamala from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will present ENACT research findings and recommendations on implementing E2U news. Eleonora Di Liberto from Uniamoci will address the steps needed to make current accessibility efforts more effective from an end-user perspective. William Kremer, BBC World Service reporter and 2025 Reuters Institute Fellow, will explore the participation and representation of people with learning disabilities in news production. Judith Hermetter from the Zero Project will present innovative solutions for accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

The day closes with an open space session, facilitated by Eleonora Di Liberto and Antonio Lo Verde (Parliament correspondent at Sicilian Regional Assembly), giving all participants the opportunity to contribute to the discussion and shape future directions.

Italian/English interpretation will be provided throughout the event.
